Man charged with breaking into Riverside Middle School in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD — A 35-year-old man from Chester was cited following an incident in Springfield on Thursday.

Authorities say they were notified of a fire alarm at Riverside Middle School at around 3:55 a.m.

Following an investigation, police allege that Brett P. Lawton broke a large window and made forced entry into the school.

Lawton was transported to Springfield Hospital for treatment of self-inflicted injuries sustained at the scene.

Police say Lawton had 9 outstanding in-state arrest warrants.

He was later discharged from the hospital and was transported to Southern State Correctional Facility.

He was issued a criminal citation to appear in court on October 18 for the charges of burglary and unlawful mischief.
