BARRE — Lieutenant William Haynes completed his last shift yesterday before retirement from full-time service with the Barre City Fire Department.

Lt. Haynes has been involved in the fire service since December of 1998, where he fought fire alongside his father at the Barre Town Fire Department.

He began working as a callman for the Barre City Fire Department in June of 2003, before becoming a career fireman in August of 2004.

The department says he has been a valuable asset, bringing his knowledge of small engine repair to regular use and developing their driver’s training program.

Lt. Haynes was awarded the Medal of Valor for his actions on December 17, 2005, at a house fire on Eastern Ave that claimed the lives of five, including four children.

Lt. Haynes says he is retiring to focus on his business, Giroux General Transport, where he will continue to train students for their commercial drivers’ licenses.
