Two people seriously injured during crash in Orwell

ORWELL — Two people were seriously injured during a crash in Orwell this morning.

Emergency responders were alerted to a report of a multi-vehicle crash involving a tractor-trailer unit at the intersection of Vermont Route 22A and Vermont Route 73 at around 9:30 a.m.

Powerlines were down across the roadway and there were serious injuries sustained from the collision.

According to the report, Timothy M. Cote, of Essex Junction, was headed south on Vermont Route 22A, while Thomas F. Thompson, 73, of Lancaster, New Hampshire, was traveling west on Vermont Route 22A, approaching the intersection.

Police say Thompson failed to stop at the stop sign and traveled into the southbound lane of Vermont Route 22A.

Cote collided with Thompson in the southbound lane of Vermont Route 22A.

Both vehicles traveled off the roadway and into a parking lot on the west side of the road, colliding with two more vehicles that were parked.

Both drivers were transported to Porter Hospital in Middlebury to be treated for their injuries.

Thompson was listed to be in critical condition and was subsequently transported to UVM Medical Center to be treated for his life-threatening injuries.

The crash is still under investigation.

VSP were assisted by members of the Orwell Fire Department, along with members of the Middlebury Rescue Squad, and the Addison County Sheriffs Department.
