WEST HAVEN — A 17-year-old was killed, and a 14-year old seriously injured during a two-vehicle crash in West Haven this morning.

The crash took place on Vermont Route 22A at around 8:00 a.m.

Police say the 17-year-old driver was from Fair Haven and lost control of his 2006 Subaru before colliding with a utility pole.

A second vehicle, driven by Rodney Batschelet, 63, of Orwell, was attempting to pass a tractor-trailer unit when the Subaru traveled into the left side of his vehicle.

The Subaru subsequently overturned several times before coming to a position of rest on its roof.

The juvenile male was pinned in the vehicle and pronounced deceased at the scene.

A 14-year-old male passenger in his vehicle was transported to Rutland Regional Hospital for treatment of internal injuries.

Batschelet was treated and released at the scene.

Speed, heavy rain, and standing water on the roadway are considered contributing factors to this crash, police say.
