Letter: The city of Newport needs elder recreation support

This letter was submitted by Scott Warthin, of Derby.

High-quality bocce courts might invite an older (and more diverse, a
more international, a less “active”) population to participate in
Newport life.

The vast bulk of Newport recreation supports youthful and team
activities (skate park, soccer fields, hockey rink, swim beach, tennis
courts) or wealth-supportive systems (boat docks, camper sites).

Yes, it has its walking path, its brilliant floral scenes, its lake views.

The vast majority of the surface area for recreation is invested in youthful team activities. Their maintenance is a repeated investment.

Bocce courts, well constructed, once in place, require no further
investment.

Yes, and horseshoe pits, as well.

Imagine tournament play — with a salt and pepper hair flair.
