Mayor Monette headed to 7th term, voters approve water tower

NEWPORT — Voters in Newport have elected Paul Monette to serve as mayor for the seventh time, as well as gave their approval to build a new water tower in the city during voting today.

Monette received a total of 246 votes, with Carl King grabbing 77 votes, and Jesse Elliott receiving 64.

Chris Vachon won his bid to serve on the Newport City Council, receiving 341 votes today.

Melissa Pettersson will continue to serve after finishing behind Vachon with 279 votes.

Carl King, who was also running for mayor, grabbed only 95 votes.

Voters today also gave their approval of a $4,985,000 proposal to build a new 210,000-gallon water system storage tank.

The plan also calls for the replacement of the Palin Hill Reservoir liner and floating cover, as well as the installation of remaining unmetered water service connections in the city.

The tower is expected to be constructed next year.

In total, 265 people voted for the project and 155 people voted against it.
