NEWPORT — Local police are searching for a man who fled the scene after a high-speed chase and crash that began in Newport Center on Friday.

Police say they initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle after it was seen traveling at around 100 miles-per-hour along Route 105.

The vehicle overtook a patrol car while traveling in the same direction.

Police say they continued the pursuit through several towns and the vehicle eventually ran over spike strips that had been deployed.

The vehicle then hit another motorist who was attempting to pull into a local business.

The driver fled on foot and was not located.

He is described as an adult black male, police say.

Another vehicle was reported stolen from a nearby home later in the evening, and an investigation into the possible connection between the two incidents is ongoing.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Orleans County Sheriff’s Department.
