Suspect arrested after manhunt in Canada draws heavy police presence in Derby Line

DERBY LINE — A 42-year-old man was arrested after a manhunt in Stanstead, Quebec, drew heavy police presence in Derby Line and Beebe Plain.

At around 8 p.m., the town of Stanstead posted on Facebook that residents should stay indoors as a precaution, as the search was underway.

Law enforcement in Vermont that had been placed along the border warned locals to stay inside as well.

The manhunt lasted for several hours following reports of gunshots.

The Sûreté du Québec reported that there were no injuries and that the suspect took off from his vehicle after shooting at police officers on Saturday afternoon.

He fled into the woods on foot and was taken into custody near Hackett Street in Stanstead at around 11:00 p.m.
