NEWPORT — Police are looking to identify and speak with a man who reportedly drove up to a teenage girl walking down the street Friday night and demanded that she get into his car.

At approximately 8:15 p.m. Friday, the Newport Police Department received a report that a 14-year-old girl was walking down Mount Vernon Street when she was approached by a man she did not know who was driving a sedan and told her to get into his car.

The incident had occurred about two hours prior.

After multiple demands, the girl refused and kept walking down the street to meet her boyfriend and the man drove off toward Western Avenue.

The man was described as driving an older model dark green Subaru Outback with several items filling up the back seat.

Police say he was an older white male with white hair that was cut short. His face was clean shaven and he had a deep voice.

The girl stated that as the man drove off, the car’s muffler was loud and rattling and that part of the vehicle’s undercarriage was loose.

The girl was unable to obtain the license plate number of the vehicle but said it had a Vermont license plate.

Anyone who may be able to identify the man or may have witnessed any suspicious activity in the area Friday night is asked to call Newport Police at 802-334-6733.
