Holland goat farmer facing animal cruelty charges

HOLLAND — Police are saying that the owner of a goat farm in Holland is now facing animal cruelty charges, after police were notified last week of some dead goats on the property.

Police say that Stacey Lopes, 42, of Holland, met with State Police on Friday and was cited to appear in Orleans County Court on July 28, 2015, to answer to the charge of Animal cruelty.

Last Friday authorities, along with representatives from the Department of Agriculture, met with workers at the farm located on the Prairie Road in Holland after being tipped off about the dead goats.

They determined that there were dead goats on the property, along with other living animals. The remaining goats were turned over to another farmer. Some of the goats were in poor health and are currently being cared for.

Police said on Friday that it was determined through investigation that the animals were malnourished and living in unsanitary conditions.

They also say farm workers cooperated with investigators from the Department of Agriculture, and members of the Vermont State Police.
