AMHERST — The Amherst Police Department is alerting the public to a wave of scam calls where fraudsters are impersonating law enforcement officers to solicit money.

According to reports received over the past few days, residents have been targeted by scammers who manipulate caller ID systems to make it appear as though calls are coming from the police department.

The callers falsely claim that money is required to resolve various legal issues or to prevent arrest.

The police department has issued a clear message that they will never ask for money over the phone.

Citizens are being advised to remain vigilant, never share personal information, and to verify any suspicious calls by contacting the police directly.

In an effort to combat the fraudulent activity, the department has provided the official number for reaching dispatch: 413-259-3000.
