NEWPORT — Police arrested a 20-year-old man from Newport on Monday in connection with a home invasion that occurred last week on Fernwood Circle.

Police say Nathan Cheney was arrested and charged with unlawful trespass.

On July 27, officers were dispatched to a home on Fernwood Circle for a reported break-in.

Upon arrival, officers learned that a man, later identified as Cheney, entered the home through an open bathroom window and allegedly claimed he was hiding from someone when confronted by the resident, who was home at the time.

Police say Cheney fled the home shortly after being confronted by the resident.

A vigilant neighbor contacted police and stated that they saw Cheney in the Fernwood Circle area around the time of the home invasion.

Another neighbor told police she saw Cheney running down the street around the time of the reported home invasion.

Based on the information provided by witnesses, Newport Police officers identified Cheney as the suspect involved in the home invasion and placed him under arrest at his home.

“I am proud of the work of all of the officers involved in this investigation,” Chief DiSanto said. “I am also grateful to the members of the public who came forward with information that was essential in helping us capture the suspect.”

Cheney was held on $10,000 cash bail pending his arraignment.

  1. Good work, everybody, for working together ! Now let’s hope our super lenient judicial system does not let him go with just a slap on the hand!
