Woman injured after car hits horse in Sutton

BARTON — A woman was sent to the hospital after a car she was riding in hit a horse in Sutton.

At around 9:00 p.m. police and Barton/Orleans firefighters were notified that a vehicle had hit a horse on US Route 5 near the Barton town line.

A 2006 Saturn being driven by Andrew Reynard, 49, of Newport, was located in a snow bank north of the roadway with front-end damage.

According to the report, horsehair was also observed on the vehicle.

Police say Reynard had been traveling west when two horses ran into the roadway. He was unable to avoid hitting one of them.

Firefighters were able to locate a horse with minor injuries consistent with having been struck at a nearby residence.

The owner was contacted and advised of the incident.

The owner told police it appeared the horse would be fine.

A female passenger suffered injuries as a result of the crash and was transported to NVRH by Lyndon Rescue.

Reynard was also seen at NVRH, and his vehicle was towed from the scene.

Three facing charges after fight in Sutton

SUTTON — Three people are facing charges after a fight that took place in Sutton on Sunday.

Police issued a statement that at around 5:30 p.m. they responded to 94 Rocky Road for a reported assault. They say their initial investigation revealed that Joseph Nagle, 33, of Sutton, was involved in a physical altercation with Charles Bachelder, 48, of Brownington.

The statement goes on to say that both men assaulted each other, and during the course of the assault, Kateria Morris, 28, of Sutton, pointed an unloaded shotgun at Bachelder, in a reported effort to stop the fight.

Nagle and Bachelder were issued citations to appear in Caledonia Court for the charge of simple assault.

Morris was issued a citation to appear in Caledonia Court for the charge of reckless endangerment.

This case is still under investigation.

Authorities say Sutton house fire considered suspicious

SUTTON — Authorities said today that the cause of a house fire in Sutton that took place over the weekend appears to be suspicious.

On Saturday, August 15, at around 10 a.m., the Sutton Fire Department responded to the report of a house fire located at 2093 U.S. Route 5, in Sutton.

Upon arriving at the scene the fire department discovered the structure was fully engulfed in flames. The building was not accessible by road and the fire department had to carry a portable pump to the scene to pump water from a
nearby river.

The building was a total loss as a result of the fire.

The Sutton Fire Chief requested a fire investigation be conducted based on the circumstances of the fire.

Today investigators from the Vermont State Police and the Division of Fire Safety said that the cause of the fire is undetermined, but believe it to be suspicious based on the location and condition of the house.

If anyone has information concerning this fire, they are being asked to contact the state Police or call the Arson tip line at 1-800-322-7766.

A reward of up to $5000 is available for information leading to the arrest and conviction of any persons charged with Arson.

The case remains under investigation at this time.

West Burke man injured after motorcycle hits deer

SUTTON — A 72-year-old man from West Burke was transported to the hospital today after his motorcycle collided with a deer.

Police say that Robert Hallett was traveling south on Vermont Route 5A in the town of Sutton when a deer ran out in front of his motorcycle.

Hallett hit the deer causing the motorcycle to go down on its side.

According to a statement issued by police, Hallett was transported to the Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital after the crash.

At this time the extent of Hallett’s injuries are unknown.
