HOLLAND — A 24-year-old man from Holland is facing DUI charges after police say an off-duty Newport police officer found him passed out inside his vehicle, parked in the middle of the road early Saturday morning.

The incident took place on the Valley Road in Holland, at around 1:30 a.m., when Newport Police Department Officer David Jacobs came upon a vehicle stopped in the middle of the road.

The vehicle, a 2012 Ford Escape, was being operated by Donald Emery.

Police say Emery was passed out behind the wheel with the vehicle still in gear, and his foot on the brake.

Officer Jacobs was able to place the vehicle in park and wake Emery up with the assistance of US Border Patrol who were in the area at the time.

Police say Emery was screened for DUI and subsequently arrested after submitting to a roadside breath test (PBT), resulting in a BAC level of .223 percent.
