ROME — A New Jersey man was arrested Monday, March 31, in connection with a government impersonation fraud scheme in Rome, police said.

Ketan H. Patel, 51, of Edison, New Jersey, was charged with attempted grand larceny in the third degree, according to the Rome Police Department.

The arrest followed an investigation into a fraud case initially reported to Rome police on March 27.

Authorities said Patel is accused of attempting to steal a large sum of money from a victim through fraudulent activity.

Police said Patel participated in an online and telephone scam where multiple individuals impersonated government officials to extort money from the victim.

The Rome Police Department Detective Division made the arrest with assistance from the New York State Police Violent Gang and Narcotics Enforcement Team.

Patel, who resides at 27 Minebrook Road in Edison, was processed at the Rome Police Department and arraigned in Rome City Court.
