DELHI — A Downsville man was sentenced to 364 days in jail for assaulting two police officers during a traffic stop incident last year.
Jeffrey C. Kaufman, 55, appeared before Delaware County Court Judge John L. Hubbard on March 11 and received the sentence for two counts of Assault in the Third Degree.
Kaufman had previously pleaded guilty to attempting to assault Officer Keith Gavette of the Colchester Police Department and Officer Kathryn Mitchell of the Walton Village Police Department.
The incident occurred on July 28, 2024, when Officer Bryanna Houck of the Colchester Police Department was conducting a traffic stop near Kaufman’s residence.
Kaufman began shouting obscenities at Officer Houck and repeatedly tried to interfere with the stop, prompting her to call for backup.
When Officer Gavette arrived to assist, the officers arrested Kaufman for Obstruction of Governmental Administration and Disorderly Conduct.
During his arrest, Kaufman struggled with officers, attempted to kick out the windows of the police vehicle, and spat on Officer Gavette.
Officers Mitchell and Wyatt Malave from the Walton Police Department arrived to help place a spit hood on Kaufman.
While being transported to the police station, Kaufman repeatedly tried to kick Officer Mitchell in her left leg and continued to be combative during booking, requiring leg restraints.
At his court arraignment, Kaufman again became combative and had to be placed in a restraint chair.
Judge Hubbard sentenced Kaufman to 364 days in jail for each assault charge, with the sentences to run concurrently and credit given for time already served.
