SPRINGFIELD — A 57-year-old Springfield woman was cited for allegedly making a false emergency report that sent police and fire personnel rushing through heavy snow to a nonexistent crash.

Cynthia Morancy faces a charge of false reports to agencies of public safety following the Feb. 16 incident, according to the Springfield Police Department.

Police said officers responded with emergency lights and sirens at approximately 5:09 p.m. to a reported motor vehicle crash with injuries in front of Shaw’s in the Plaza.

Upon arrival during heavy snowfall and road conditions, officers determined there was no crash or injury at the scene.

An investigation revealed Morancy had allegedly called emergency dispatch to prompt an immediate response to what turned out to be a non-emergency situation, police said.

According to authorities, Morancy’s explanation for the call changed multiple times during questioning, ranging from a past medical problem to a vehicle supposedly out of gas to a broken windshield wiper.

Morancy was issued a citation to appear in Vermont Superior Court, Criminal Division, Windsor Unit, on April 8 at 8:30 a.m.
