FAIRFIELD — After a joint investigation involving local and federal law enforcement, two young adults have been arrested in connection with the construction and detonation of homemade explosive devices in Fairfield.
On Dec. 1, at approximately 12:25 p.m., the Fairfield Police Department was alerted by a hospital to a young adult male with severe hand injuries from an explosive device.
The patient admitted to creating and setting off the devices with an accomplice earlier that day.
The investigation, carried out by Fairfield Police, the FBI, and the Stamford Police Department Bomb Squad, found that four explosive devices were made using materials sourced online and from retail stores.
The devices were taken to a remote area in Pine Creek Marsh, where two detonated successfully.
A third exploded prematurely, causing the injuries, while the fourth was safely disposed of by the bomb squad.
Following a meticulous investigation, arrest warrants were obtained by Fairfield Detectives.
Nathaniel Lennon, 19, surrendered to authorities on Jan. 13 and Daniel Calarco, 18, turned himself in the next day.
Both were released on $10,000 bonds and are scheduled to appear in Bridgeport Superior Court on Jan. 21 and Jan. 24, respectively.
Lennon and Calarco face charges of Breach of Peace in the 1st Degree and two counts of Reckless Endangerment in the 1st Degree.
The Fairfield Police Department credits the resolution of the case to the cooperation between agencies and reiterates the dangers of homemade explosives, urging public vigilance in reporting suspicious activities.
