SWAMPSCOTT — Police responded to a distressing situation Thursday morning after receiving calls around 9:15 a.m. about a resident behaving erratically and wielding a knife.

Upon arrival, officers from the Swampscott Police Department established a secure perimeter around the residence and evacuated nearby neighbors as a safety precaution.

Communication was initiated with the individual using the public address system on a police cruiser.

The male subject was safely directed to exit the home and was subsequently detained without incident.

He was transported to a local hospital for evaluation.
