Pelham driver airlifted to hospital after crash into utility pole

PELHAM — A driver was airlifted to a Boston hospital Tuesday morning after their car collided with a utility pole on Main Street, trapping them inside the vehicle.

The Pelham Fire Department responded to the incident at approximately 9:50 a.m. on Jan. 10, after receiving reports of a single motor vehicle collision.

Upon arrival, first responders found a passenger car with severe front-end damage and the driver pinned under the dashboard and entangled in the footwell.

Lieutenant Dan Rooney, incident commander and first on the scene with Ambulance 3, coordinated the response effort which included Car 2, Engine 1, Car 1, Ambulance 2, and Engine 4.

A total of 10 Pelham Fire Department personnel responded to the scene.

Despite there being no mutual aid at the scene or station coverage, the Pelham Fire and Police Departments efficiently managed the emergency.

Additional resources, such as Engine 4 and Ambulance 2, were called to assist with patient care and the extrication process.

Boston MedFlight was requested due to the severity of the patient’s injuries.

The patient was extricated and stabilized for flight, with MedFlight administering blood products in the ambulance.

Within about 40 minutes from the initial call, the patient was en route to the hospital by helicopter.

The Pelham Fire Department acknowledged the efforts of Boston MedFlight and the Pelham Police Department for their assistance during the incident.

As part of the safety message following the collision, Chief Dan Newman of the Pelham Fire Department reminded the community about the importance of wearing seatbelts and obeying speed limits while driving.
