New Boston residents warned of phone scam using local area codes

1 min read

NEW BOSTON — The New Boston Police Department has issued a warning to residents about a recent spate of scam phone calls from numbers with the local 603 area code, urging caution and vigilance.

In the past 48 hours, several individuals have reported receiving calls seeking immediate contact with a close relative.

One particular message stated, “I am calling you to discuss a matter that has been forwarded to my office for consideration of legal action, including the filing of a complaint with the court to discuss the pending options that may fall against you. You will need to immediately contact the firm directly in your file…”

The police department highlighted several red flags associated with these scams, including demands for money, pressure for urgent action, and the use of intimidation tactics, such as threats of legal consequences or harm to a loved one.

Residents are advised that such calls are often part of sophisticated operations run from overseas call centers using Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology.

The technology enables scammers to mimic local phone numbers, making the calls appear legitimate.

Authorities are encouraging anyone with doubts about the authenticity of such calls to contact the New Boston Police Department for verification.

They remind the community that these scammers can be convincing, but residents should trust their instincts.

If a phone call seems suspicious or too aggressive, it likely is not genuine.

The New Boston Police Department stresses that residents should never hesitate to question unexpected or suspicious calls and has reassured the community that they are ready to assist with any concerns.
