HOPKINTON — Hopkinton Police Department has issued a scam alert to the public, cautioning residents about a rise in online fraud schemes that exploit victims’ emotions and sense of urgency.
According to authorities, scammers have been increasingly posing as IT professionals, law enforcement officers, or even loved ones in distress to deceive individuals into withdrawing and sending large sums of money.
These fraudulent activities often involve victims purchasing gift cards or depositing money through Bitcoin Depots or courier services.
The police highlighted several common tactics used by scammers, such as falsely claiming a computer has corrupt files, demanding payments to clear alleged warrants, asserting that a family member has been arrested and needs bail, or creating fake dating profiles to profess love and solicit funds.
To combat these scams, Hopkinton Police are advising the public to educate family members, particularly the elderly, about these threats.
They also recommend not answering calls from unfamiliar phone numbers, ignoring any threats made by scammers, and never allowing remote access to personal computers.
Residents who have encountered similar scam attempts are urged to contact the Hopkinton Police Department at 401-377-7750 or reach out to their local police.
The department also emphasized the importance of not sending money to unknown individuals under any circumstances.
