NEWPORT — A local nonprofit dedicated to preventing homelessness raised awareness for its cause through its third annual talent competition, while honoring a community leader for her work with housing insecurity.
The Joshua House, Inc. event, held Monday at the Eastside Restaurant, saw Kelby Rodriguez and Steve McManus take first place in the competition judged by local community members Mark Shelton, Earlene Connolly, and Chris Cook.
During the event, Modern Woodmen of America presented its “Hometown Hero” award to Elia Spates of Memphremagog Rentals for her efforts in homelessness prevention.
Joshua House, Inc., established in 1996, reported spending over $23,000 on housing assistance in the first nine months of 2024. The Christian organization provides services to community members regardless of religious affiliation.
The event drew support from multiple local businesses and organizations, including Community National Bank and North Country Hospital.
