FALL RIVER — Two separate shooting incidents on Saturday night led to a self-inflicted gunshot wound for a juvenile and the arrest of an adult male, as officers of the Fall River Police Department quickly addressed the violent outbursts.
The first incident occurred around 10:15 p.m. when the Patrol Bureau was dispatched to Woodman Street on reports of gunfire.
Officers Darian Smith and Jacob Swenson, while en route to the scene, spotted a vehicle speeding away from the area and initiated a traffic stop.
During the stop, a juvenile fled on foot but accidentally shot himself in the groin/upper thigh while running.
The officers provided medical assistance, and the injured suspect was transported to a local hospital where he is currently recuperating.
A firearm was seized, and the juvenile is expected to face charges related to the incident.
As officers were managing the scene on Woodman Street, another report of shots fired came in from Charles Street.
Officers swiftly converged on the area in search of the shooter.
Officer James Mello, while patrolling Woodman Street, noticed an individual matching the description of the Charles Street shooter.
Upon detaining the suspect, Officer Mello found the man to be in possession of multiple firearms and ammunition.
The suspect was arrested and will face charges associated with discharging a firearm.
The Fall River Police Department has clarified that the two incidents were not directly connected and reassured the public that there is no ongoing threat to community safety.
