STAMFORD — After a year-long investigation, Stamford Police have arrested a man in connection with a fatal stabbing that occurred on Christmas Day.

Juan Camilo Avila-Olmos, 28, was taken into custody on Dec. 21 in Los Angeles with the help of local police.

He is accused of killing Juan David Hernandez-Velasco, 32, during an altercation at a holiday party last year.

The incident began in the early hours of Dec. 25 when Stamford patrol officers were dispatched to the city hospital following a report of a stabbing victim in the emergency room.

Hernandez-Velasco, who had been dropped off by unidentified individuals, later died in the Intensive Care Unit after emergency surgery.

Investigations pinpointed the party’s location at 77 Crystal Street, where witnesses reported a fight outside the residence that led to the lethal injuries.

Avila-Olmos, who reportedly moved to Los Angeles shortly after the incident, is held on a $5 million bond as a fugitive from justice under a warrant issued by Stamford Superior Court on Dec. 20 for the murder of Hernandez-Velasco.

Avila-Olmos is currently awaiting extradition procedures to face charges in Connecticut.
