SPRINGFIELD — A Springfield couple has been charged with animal cruelty and illegal importation of animals after a months-long investigation into reports of neglected pets, according to Springfield Police Department.
Officers responded to a call on July 21 about possible animal abuse.
Animal Control Officer Baker and Officer Freeman, with assistance from Windsor County Sheriff’s Department and Vermont Fish & Wildlife, discovered multiple animals in distress at the residence of Benjiman A. Runnells Sr, 37, and Chelsea L. Perry, 34.
The investigation revealed that several animals were found in varying states of starvation, dehydration, and suffering from parasite infestations.
All the animals have since been rescued and are receiving necessary treatment and care.
Runnells and Perry were apprehended on Nov. 15 at a Park Street residence and were issued criminal citations.
They are scheduled to appear in Windsor County Criminal Court on Jan. 25 to face charges related to the allegations.
