WHITMAN — A local man faces charges after police say he stole multiple packages from an apartment complex over several months.
Colin Mackie, 41, of Whitman, was arrested Monday and charged with breaking and entering a building during the nighttime with intent to commit a felony and larceny from a building.
Whitman police began investigating in early December after receiving numerous reports of package thefts from a large Marble Street apartment complex dating back to September.
After reviewing surveillance footage, detectives determined at least eight thefts were committed by the same suspect.
On Dec. 18 at 5:15 a.m., a detective conducting surveillance at the complex observed Mackie enter the building and take three packages from the mail area, including a “bait” package placed there as part of the investigation, police said.
Officers arrested Mackie inside the building.
Police said they recovered additional evidence consistent with past thefts and expect to file more charges.
Mackie was arraigned Wednesday in Brockton District Court.
Police Chief Timothy Hanlon praised Detective Sgt. Patrick Burtt-Henderson for his work on the case, which spanned multiple weeks.
Authorities ask anyone who believes they were a victim of package theft to contact Whitman police at 781-447-1212.
