VERNON — A Vernon man was arrested Thursday in connection with a June crash that killed an 81-year-old woman and seriously injured an 83-year-old man, police said.

Stephen Lewis, 34, of Manchester, faces charges of second-degree assault, misconduct with a motor vehicle, distracted driving and failure to exercise reasonable care near a vulnerable user on a public way, according to the Vernon Police Department.

The fatal accident occurred on June 12 at 9:30 a.m. when a Toyota Sienna minivan, driven by Lewis, struck Anna and Joseph Krocheski while they were crossing Warren Avenue at the Rockville Spur section of the Vernon Rails-to-Trails.

Anna Krocheski was later pronounced dead at Hartford Hospital, while her husband, Joseph Krocheski, has remained in stable condition since the accident.

Lewis, who was not injured in the crash, had been cooperating with the investigation prior to his arrest.

The incident has been under investigation by Vernon Police and Metro Traffic Services.

He was held on a $75,000 bond and appeared in Rockville Superior Court on Nov. 27.
