SPRINGFIELD — Two illegal firearms were seized and two men arrested early Tuesday after Springfield police responded to a ShotSpotter activation in the city, authorities said.
Police officers were dispatched around 1:55 a.m. to the 400 block of Union Street following the alert.
On arrival, they encountered three individuals near the intersection of Union and Walnut streets.
One of the subjects, later identified as Rashae McKinney, 21, of Springfield, was seen with a firearm protruding from his hoodie pocket.
When officers attempted to detain McKinney, he fled but was quickly apprehended.
Police seized a Ghost Gun loaded with 9 rounds from McKinney, along with additional loose ammunition found in his fanny pack.
Another suspect, Brian Grant, 21, also of Springfield, attempted to evade police while clutching his waistband.
He was captured on the 400 block of State Street.
A loaded firearm reported stolen from Springfield was recovered on Grant, along with oxycodone, clonazepam, and dextroamphetamine found in his possession.
The third individual present during the incident was questioned and released.
During the investigation, a shell casing was located on the 400 block of Union Street, corresponding with the initial ShotSpotter detection.
Grant faces charges including carrying a loaded firearm without a license, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building, resisting arrest, possession of a Class B drug, possession of a Class E drug, and receiving stolen property less than $1,200.
McKinney is charged with carrying a loaded large capacity firearm on a public way, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building, carrying a firearm without a license, resisting arrest, and possession of ammunition without an FID card.
