HAMPTON — New Hampshire State Police provided an update Saturday on their investigation of a wrong-way driver who was involved in a fatal accident in Massachusetts after being spotted on Interstate 95.

State Troopers from the Troop A barracks noticed a Tesla traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of I-95 in Hampton just before midnight on Nov. 27.

Efforts to stop the driver were initiated immediately, with coordination with Massachusetts State Police as the suspect continued into their jurisdiction.

The driver, identified as Keoma Duarte, 40, of New Bedford, Massachusetts, subsequently was involved in a crash that resulted in the death of Jeremy Cole, 49, of Exeter, New Hampshire.

Cole, who served as a sergeant with the Public Safety & Police Department at Endicott College in Beverly, Massachusetts, was returning home after his work shift ended.

Duarte sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a hospital in Boston for treatment.

The New Hampshire investigation revealed that prior to the incident, Duarte had been driving northbound on I-95 before entering the parking lot of a closed NH Liquor & Wine Outlet.

He was captured on surveillance footage passing through the lot and then exiting in the wrong direction at about 11:45 p.m. A trooper spotted him less than a minute later driving the wrong way.

Criminal charges in New Hampshire are expected as the investigation continues.
