Springfield police seize firearm, arrest New York man

SPRINGFIELD — Springfield Police Firearms Investigation Unit detectives, led by Sgt. David Robillard, arrested a 21-year-old man Wednesday evening after seizing a large capacity firearm and drugs during a traffic stop.

Kareem Evans of Brooklyn, New York, was apprehended on Nov. 27 at about 7:40 p.m. following a surveillance operation in the Pine Point neighborhood, according to the Springfield Police Department.

Detectives noticed a vehicle with a revoked registration drive away from a residence and followed it into Chicopee.

After additional detectives arrived to aid in the operation, they conducted a traffic stop near the intersection of Orchard Street and Front Street.

Evans, a passenger in the vehicle, fled on foot while holding a backpack.

He discarded the backpack while being pursued by detectives and surrendered shortly after.

The backpack contained a loaded firearm capable of holding 15 rounds and a large quantity of marijuana.

Evans faces multiple charges, including carrying a loaded large capacity firearm on a public way, carrying a firearm without a license, improper storage of a firearm, possession with intent to distribute a Class D drug, violation of an abuse prevention order, and an outstanding arrest warrant.

The vehicle involved was towed, and the driver received a citation.

Evans is currently being held by the Springfield Police Department as the investigation continues.
