Shrewsbury police ramp up crackdown on impaired driving in December

1 min read

SHREWSBURY — Shrewsbury Police Department announced plans to intensify efforts against impaired driving throughout December, deploying additional officers to patrol the streets.

The increased enforcement is part of a broader initiative funded by a $40,000 grant from the FY25 Municipal Road Safety Grant Program, administered by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Executive Office of Public Safety and Security.

The “Winter Impaired Driving” campaign kicks off a series of targeted operations, which also includes efforts to combat distracted driving, enforce seatbelt use, and reduce speeding.

A subsequent “Summer Impaired Driving” campaign will further support these efforts.

Approximately $25,000 of the grant will support the deployment of extra officers, who will be focused exclusively on these traffic enforcement campaigns, supplementing the regular police presence.

The move follows alarming statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which found that in 2021, 13,384 people lost their lives in crashes involving an impaired driver.

In Massachusetts alone, impaired drivers were involved in 36% of all fatal crashes that year.

Local authorities are determined to provide a safe holiday season for all, aiming to minimize the risk of accidents and injuries caused by impaired driving.

The Shrewsbury Police urge the community to drive responsibly and avoid driving under the influence.
