SUTTON — A Vermont man faces multiple charges following a collision with a New Hampshire State Trooper’s vehicle on Interstate 89 during a snowstorm.
On Nov. 28, New Hampshire State Troopers from Troop D barracks were handling numerous incidents caused by the Thanksgiving day storm, with many crashes and disabled vehicles reported between Warner and Lebanon on I-89.
At 10:11 a.m., a Trooper, with their cruiser’s blue emergency lights flashing, was assisting a motorist off the road on I-89 southbound in Sutton, preceded by a marked Department of Transportation pickup with an electronic sign directing traffic to move over.
During the assistance, a 2009 black Honda Accord, driven by 22-year-old Daniel Poroj of Shelburne, was traveling too fast for the snowy conditions, slid into the Trooper’s cruiser, and subsequently hit a fire chief’s pickup truck that was also at the scene.
Both the Trooper and Poroj received treatment for minor injuries at New London Hospital.
Poroj was summoned to Hillsborough District Court on March 18 on charges including operating without a valid license, negligent driving, having an unregistered vehicle, violation of the Move Over law, and excessive speed for road conditions.
The incident response also included support from New London Police and Fire Departments, Sutton Fire Department, Northeast Towing and Recovery, S&P Auto, and the New Hampshire Department of Transportation.
The New Hampshire State Police are reminding drivers about the state law requiring them to slow down and move over for highway emergencies.
Failure to comply can result in a $75 fine plus additional penalties for a first offense, and $250 plus penalties for subsequent offenses within a year.
