Bedford police warn of ‘fake warrant scam’ targeting residents

1 min read

BEDFORD — The Bedford Police Department is alerting the community about a new telephone scam where individuals are falsely told they have an outstanding arrest warrant and must pay to avoid arrest.

Residents have reported receiving calls from perpetrators claiming to be law enforcement officers, who then demand immediate payment to resolve the supposed warrant.

The scammer’s phone number appears on caller IDs as the Bedford Police Department’s number, adding to the deception.

The police are emphasizing that no legitimate police officer or department would ever call individuals to request money for warrant clearance or to prevent arrest.

They are urging the public to be vigilant about caller ID manipulation, which can be used by scammers to make it seem like they are calling from a trusted local number.

Authorities are also advising residents not to share personal information, such as social security numbers, bank details, or other sensitive data, over the phone with unknown callers.

Anyone who receives such a call is encouraged to hang up immediately and report the incident to the Bedford Police or their local police department.
