Taunton police arrest man after shooting at officers during barricade situation

TAUNTON — A man was taken into custody Wednesday morning after shooting at Taunton Police officers while barricaded inside an apartment bathroom, authorities said.

The incident occurred around 9 a.m. when police were conducting a well-being check at a residence on Hodges Avenue.

As officers entered the home, the suspect, who had barricaded himself in the bathroom, fired shots at them.

No one was struck by the gunfire and at least one officer returned fire during the confrontation.

Back-up units and additional resources were called to the scene to evacuate the building and secure the surrounding area.

Officers quickly established communication with the suspect and, after about an hour, negotiated a peaceful surrender.

The man was arrested and is currently being held at the Taunton Police Station pending booking procedures.

Authorities have not yet released his identity.

Officials said they consider the shooting an isolated incident and assured the public that there is no further danger to the community.

The Plymouth County Sheriff’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation is processing the scene of the encounter.

Taunton Police expressed gratitude to Massachusetts State Police, the Taunton Fire Department, Taunton Emergency Management, and Brewster Ambulance for their support and rapid response to the situation.

Authorities have not disclosed additional details about the shooting or the suspect’s motives.

The investigation is ongoing.
