WINDHAM — A motor vehicle collision with entrapment occurred Monday on North Lowell Road, resulting in serious injuries and the closure of the roadway for several hours.
The incident, reported at 1:04 p.m., took place between Bedros and County Road.
The Windham Fire Department, led by Fire Chief Thomas McPherson Jr, responded to the emergency call along with other units.
Upon arrival, firefighters encountered a head-on collision involving two vehicles with heavy damage.
The white compact car, driven by a female operator, and a pickup truck, driven by a male operator, both had occupants trapped inside.
Chief McPherson took command of the scene, with Engine-2 crew focusing on extrication operations.
The male driver of the pickup was found conscious and complained of chest pain, while the female driver of the compact car was semi-conscious with severe lower leg injuries, requiring hydraulic tools for extrication.
Additional rescue tools and personnel were summoned, including Ladder-1 and Assistant Chief Brady from Windham C-2.
A staffing recall was issued, and an extra ambulance was requested from the Derry Fire Department.
The extrication process revealed the extent of the female driver’s injuries was critical, prompting a call for Air Medical transport to a Boston hospital.
Both drivers were initially taken to Parkland Medical Center, with the female operator later airlifted for further treatment.
Windham Police closed North Lowell Road to conduct an investigation and facilitate the work of emergency crews.
The road remained closed for an extended period.
