Multi-vehicle crash on I-89 near Montpelier caused by icy conditions

1 min read

MONTPELIER — A series of multiple vehicle crashes occurred on Interstate 89 near exit 8 early Tuesday morning due to slick road conditions.

Vermont State Police, along with Berlin and Montpelier Fire Departments, Montpelier EMS, and the Department of AOT, responded to the scene following reports of the accident at around 7:39 a.m.

The collisions, which involved six vehicles including a tractor-trailer, were attributed to black ice that formed on the roadway as a result of freezing rain.

Despite the adverse weather conditions leading to wet and icy roads, there were no injuries reported among the drivers and passengers involved.

Authorities closed the interstate to facilitate the cleanup and removal of the damaged vehicles.

AOT and tow trucks worked for nearly two and a half hours to clear the area and reopen the interstate to traffic.

The road was successfully cleared and the interstate was reopened at approximately 10:30 a.m. Drivers are urged to remain cautious as intermittent rain and cold temperatures may continue to affect road conditions.
