Acton man dies after sustaining burns in outdoor fire

ACTON — A local man succumbed to his injuries Wednesday following a fire that occurred over the weekend in Acton.

On Sunday, Nov. 17, at approximately 10:46 a.m., the Maine State Fire Marshal Office was summoned to a residence at 151 Ice Road to help the Maine Forest Service investigate a fire that had caused a serious injury.

The cause of the fire, which began outdoors and damaged nearby woods and a shed, remains under investigation.

Volney Spalding, 64, the homeowner, sustained severe burns to his upper body while attempting to control the blaze.

Spalding was airlifted to Maine Medical Center in Portland for treatment.

The Fire Marshal Office was informed on Wednesday, Nov. 20, that Spalding had passed away.

The Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta will conduct an autopsy to ascertain the exact cause and manner of his death.

Meanwhile, the Maine Forest Service continues to investigate the initial cause of the outdoor fire.
