TOWNSHEND — A California man was apprehended Wednesday afternoon following an assault earlier in the day at Grace Cottage Hospital, according to Vermont State Police.

Adam Rauch, 22, of San Diego, was taken into custody around 2:10 p.m. on foot along Route 30 in Newfane.

The arrest occurred without incident, with state police crediting public tips for the quick location of the suspect.

The incident began when hospital officials contacted police shortly after 9:30 a.m. to report that Rauch had attacked a nurse and caused property damage before fleeing the scene.

Described as being in a potential crisis and dangerous, Rauch was last seen wearing blue hospital scrubs, a paper top, and no shoes.

The nurse sustained facial injuries, was treated, and subsequently released.

The assault prompted temporary safety measures at the hospital and nearby schools, which have since been lifted.

Rauch is facing charges of assault on a protected professional and unlawful mischief.

The state police will continue to investigate and provide further information as it becomes available.
