BOSTON — A routine traffic stop in Mattapan early Monday led to the arrest of a local man after police found multiple firearms, including an assault rifle, and drugs in his vehicle.
At 12:29 a.m., officers assigned to District B-3 conducted the stop at the intersection of Blue Hill Ave. and Mattapan St. and apprehended 38-year-old Jeffrey Salvant.
According to the Boston Police Department, Salvant’s vehicle was initially spotted speeding on Blue Hill Ave. toward Talbot Ave.
When the officers attempted to pull the vehicle over, Salvant continued driving for about a half-mile before stopping.
Upon approaching the vehicle, officers noticed Salvant with his hands up and eyes wide open.
A strong smell of alcohol was detected inside the car, which also contained two female passengers and open alcoholic beverage containers.
During their interaction, Salvant exhibited signs of being under the influence and potentially armed.
A pat-frisk resulted in the discovery of an illegal switchblade on Salvant’s person, and two loaded handguns inside his jacket.
All occupants were handcuffed for officer safety, and a subsequent search revealed a plastic bag containing suspected cocaine in Salvant’s pocket.
In the vehicle, officers found a black range bag containing a privately made AR-style firearm without a stock and a magazine loaded with .300 blackout ammunition.
The firearm, lacking serial numbers, was less than 16 inches in length.
Salvant was charged with multiple firearm and drug-related offenses and is slated for arraignment in Dorchester District Court.
Additional traffic citations were issued for speeding, running a red light, operating a vehicle with an open container, and driving under the influence.
