Cranston police warn of ‘grandparent’ scam, imposters pose as lawyers

1 min read

CRANSTON — The Cranston Police Department is issuing an alert to residents about a scam targeting grandparents, where con artists pose as lawyers and claim that their grandchild has been arrested, and money is needed for fines.

In this “grandparent” scam, the phony lawyer contacts elderly individuals, requesting funds to cover supposed legal expenses for their grandchild.

The imposters often exert pressure, insisting on urgency and confidentiality to manipulate their targets into sending money quickly.

Authorities want to remind the public that the Cranston Police Department does not solicit payment over the phone for fines, nor does it ask for unconventional methods like Bitcoin or other electronic funds transfer methods.

Residents are urged to be vigilant.

If they receive a suspicious call, they should not engage or provide any personal or financial information.

Instead, hang up immediately and contact the Cranston Police Department at (401) 942-2211 to report the incident and verify any claims.

The police emphasize the importance of protecting personal information and encourage residents to reach out to them with any concerns or questions regarding potential scams.
