NEWPORT — A two-vehicle crash on Pleasant Street Monday afternoon led to significant damage, an injury, and a traffic violation, according to Newport Police. The incident, which occurred at approximately 3:41 p.m., was also captured on surveillance footage later posted on Facebook, shedding light on the moments leading up to the collision.
Emergency responders, including the Newport Police Department, Newport Ambulance, and Newport Fire, arrived to find two vehicles stopped in the travel portion of the road. Traffic was being redirected as authorities worked to assess the situation. Both vehicles sustained heavy damage and were towed from the scene.
Police reported that the crash occurred when one vehicle, traveling east on Pleasant Street, attempted to turn left in front of an oncoming vehicle traveling west. The westbound vehicle was unable to avoid the collision.
The impact caused undisclosed injuries to a passenger in the eastbound vehicle, who was transported to North Country Hospital for treatment. The driver of the eastbound vehicle was subsequently issued a traffic violation for failure to yield when turning left.
The security footage shared on social media has garnered attention from residents, offering a visual account of the crash. Authorities have not confirmed whether the video will be used as part of the investigation.
