Springfield police seek help identifying ATM skimming suspects

1 min read

SPRINGFIELD — Springfield Police Department is actively investigating a series of skimming device incidents and is calling on the community for assistance in identifying the suspects involved.

Local businesses have been advised to inspect their point-of-sale systems, ATMs, and gas pumps regularly for any unauthorized devices.

Over the past weekend, four skimming devices were discovered inside various convenience stores either by vigilant employees or during the retrieval by the suspects themselves.

The Springfield Police Detective Bureau has released images of the individuals believed to be responsible for installing at least one of the devices.

Authorities are encouraging anyone with information about the suspects to contact the Springfield Police Detective Bureau at 413-787-6355.

Tips can also be submitted anonymously via text message to CRIMES (274637) with the keyword SOLVE followed by the information.

In light of the recent skimming incidents, police are warning the public about the dangers of debit card fraud and advising customers to choose the credit option when possible to avoid entering a PIN.

FICO has reported that 60% of skimming takes place at non-bank, privately-owned ATMs, which are typically more vulnerable to tampering.

The police department recommends a quick visual inspection of card readers for any signs of tampering, such as looseness, crookedness, or visible damage.

A keypad that is unusually difficult to press or feels thicker than normal may indicate a false keypad overlay.

When entering a PIN, it is also advised to cover the keypad with one hand to shield the number from potential hidden cameras.

Members of the community are urged to report any discovered skimming devices immediately to a staff member or to the police.
