Wellesley police warn of jury duty scam calls demanding money

1 min read

WELLESLEY — The Wellesley Police Department is alerting the public of an ongoing phone scam where individuals are impersonating police officers and demanding money for allegedly missed jury duty.

Residents have reported receiving calls from the phone number 781-235-1212, which appears to be the department’s business line.

The scammers are using spoofing technology to falsify the caller ID and are accessing officers’ names through open-source information to seem credible.

According to the police, the callers are telling residents that they have missed jury duty and must pay large sums of money to avoid arrest.

These scammers have been described as persistent and aggressive, threatening legal action if their demands are not met.

The police are advising anyone who receives such a call to simply hang up and not to engage with the scammers.

They emphasize that the Wellesley Police Department would never solicit money over the phone for missed jury duty.

Residents who are concerned about the legitimacy of such calls or any other phone solicitations demanding money are encouraged to hang up and contact the Wellesley Police Department directly to speak with an officer regarding the situation.
