SPRINGFIELD — A 16-year-old male suspect was extradited to Massachusetts from New Hampshire on Wednesday in connection with the Oct. 19 murder of 19-year-old Matthew Chaney.
On the night of the murder, Springfield police officers responded to a ShotSpotter activation at approximately 12:35 a.m. in the 100 block of Nursery Street.
Upon arrival, they discovered Chaney, who had been shot and ultimately died from his injuries at the scene.
Under the leadership of Captain Trent Duda, the Springfield Police Homicide Unit initiated an investigation that led to the identification of the 16-year-old suspect.
A warrant for his arrest on murder charges was issued on Oct. 28.
The suspect was apprehended at approximately 1:30 p.m. on Nov. 1 at a residence in Manchester, New Hampshire, in a joint operation involving the Springfield Police Firearms Investigation Unit, Massachusetts State Police VFAS, U.S.
Marshals Fugitive Task Force, and Manchester Police.
Following his arrest, Springfield Police Homicide Detectives traveled to Manchester on Nov. 6 to transport the suspect back to Massachusetts.
He was booked at the Paul J. Fenton Public Safety Complex later that afternoon.
The investigation remains active and is being conducted by the Springfield Police Homicide Unit in collaboration with the Hampden District Attorney’s Murder Unit.
Due to the suspect’s age, neither his name nor his booking photo will be released.
