Somerville police warn of iPhone package thefts, advise signature on delivery

1 min read

SOMERVILLE — In response to a spate of package thefts, the Somerville Police Department issued a public service announcement urging residents who order iPhones to take additional security measures to ensure the safe delivery of their devices.

According to the announcement, thieves have been targeting packages containing iPhones both regionally and within Somerville.

It appears that the culprits may be following FedEx delivery trucks in their vehicles or on mopeds, looking for opportunities to steal the high-value items.

The thefts often occur within minutes after the packages are dropped off, leaving little time for the recipients to react.

To combat this issue, the police department advises residents to request that any delivery of iPhones require a signature upon arrival.

This adds an extra layer of security, as it ensures the package is handed directly to the recipient or someone authorized by them.

For those who may not be home during delivery hours, the department suggests shipping the items to a secure location, such as a local store where the package can be held for later pickup.

The police also encourage the community to be vigilant and report any suspicious behavior.

If a vehicle or moped is seen circling the neighborhood during the day, especially in proximity to delivery trucks, residents should not hesitate to call 911.
