Augusta police warn of jury duty scam, urge public to report to FBI

1 min read

AUGUSTA — The Augusta Police Department issued a scam alert today, cautioning residents about fraudulent calls from individuals posing as law enforcement officials, claiming residents have missed jury duty and insisting on payment of a fee.

According to authorities, scammers are contacting locals, misrepresenting themselves as police officers, and alleging that the individual has failed to appear for jury duty.

They then demand a “fine” be paid and try to extract personal billing information to settle the supposed fee.

The police department has clarified that neither the Augusta Police Department nor any other law enforcement agency will call individuals to solicit money for missing jury duty.

Residents who receive such calls are advised not to provide any personal information and report the incident to the Federal Bureau of Investigation to aid in tracking these scams.

Reports can be made online at the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at https://www.ic3.gov/.
