NEWPORT — Samuel Douglass emerged victorious in the Orleans Senate race Tuesday night, defeating Democratic opponent Katherine Sims with 56.2 percent of the vote. Douglass, a Republican, received 7,168 votes, while Sims, the current House Representative for Orleans-4, garnered 4,894 votes, or 38.37 percent. In total, 12,755 ballots were cast across the district.
Douglass celebrated his win with gratitude, acknowledging the support from his constituents and campaign team. “I’m humbled by the support we received and grateful for the help we had to spread our message far and wide,” Douglass said. “I’m overjoyed to represent the district as your Senator for the next two years.”
In a brief interview, Douglass said he’s ready to “hit the ground running in January” with a focus on ensuring the Northeast Kingdom’s interests are represented in Montpelier. He also took a moment to honor his family and supporters, including his wife, Senator Bobby Starr for his years of service, and Governor Phil Scott for his endorsement.
Douglass’s victory speech included plans to involve the district’s towns more closely in the legislative process. “I have big plans to ensure that Vermonters up here can be involved in the legislative process,” he said.
Sims conceded shortly after 10 p.m., later sending an email to supporters. “This campaign quickly became more than just one person’s effort—it was all of ours,” Sims wrote. “Though we came up just short, I want to congratulate Sam Douglass on his victory and wish him the best.”
Douglass plans to celebrate his win but will first fulfill a volunteer commitment at Meals on Wheels, stepping in for a last-minute cancellation. “It was an emergency,” he said of his Wednesday morning shift.
