NEWPORT — In 1914, Charles Chaplin appeared for the first time in a costume which over a hundred years later is instantly recognizable. During his long life and career, Chaplin famously enjoyed the prestige and wealth that came with his accomplishments.
On Sunday, February 1, at 4 p.m., The Now Playing Newport Music Series will present “A 100 Anniversary Screening of Chaplin Films,” at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, located at 44 Second Street, Newport.
The program will include:
The Fireman (1916)
The Vagabond (1916)
Easy Street (1917)
Proceeds will benefit the St. Mark’s Food Shelf.
Hailed as the cinema’s first genius, Chaplin set the standard for silent screen comedy as a performer, writer, and director. Starting with his features, he began composing his own music scores.
This is a rare chance to see three early short comedies made during the period Chaplin called “the happiest period of my career.”
Bradleigh Stockwell, a local filmmaker and silent film enthusiast, will be introducing these films to Newport.
