ROCKINGHAM — A local man was arrested Sunday night after allegedly stealing his son’s vehicle and then leaving the scene of a subsequent accident, authorities said.

Robert Richards, 56, of Rockingham, is accused of grand larceny, operating without owner’s consent, and leaving the scene of an accident.

The incident unfolded on Upper Bartonsville Road and Brockway Mills Road around 9:01 p.m.

Noah Richards, 23, of Nashua, New Hampshire, reported to 911 that his father had taken his vehicle without permission.

He was following the stolen vehicle when both cars crashed, after which the elder Richards fled the scene.

Police located Robert Richards shortly after and apprehended him without further incident.

He was taken to the Springfield Police Department and later released with a citation.

Richards is scheduled to appear in Vermont Superior Court, Windham Criminal Division, on Dec. 31 at 8:30 a.m. to respond to the charges.
